I can’t remember who recommended Amy & Isabelle to me but I’m glad they did, what beautiful writing. The book focuses on the difficult relationship between Isabelle and her teenage daughter Amy.
Set in a small town in New England the pressure of the stifling summer in a town full of social constraints and judgements the issues weigh heavy on the reader. As mother fights with her own shame and guilt from the past and daughter fights with the reality of an illicit affair with her teacher we also see the trials crossing many within the town.
Strout also writes with humour, when we are treated to seeing the women working in the mill it can not help but raise a smile. Strout writes beautifully with such feeling, there is such warmth from the book as we see the wonderful women in this story battle through and see friendship blossom.
I’m looking forward to discovering more Elizabeth Strout.
